Khachadour Garabedian: Local college student makes an incredible discovery in Philadelphia

A local college history major has discovered through some other members of the Armenian community that a Philadelphia Armenian had actually served as a sailor in the U. S. Civil War. Finding this incredibly intriguing that an Armenian actually served in the Civil War, he did more research and discovered that he is buried in an unmarked grave at Fernwood Cemetery on the border of Philadelphia. He would like to bring some more attention to this astounding Philadelphia Armenian (believed to be the very “first Philadelphia Armenian” and therefore originator of our community) by getting his gravesite marked.

This could be accomplished quite cheaply, because the US government will provide free government-issue grave stones to all veterans, and the Veterans Affairs Administration has confirmed that this man, Khachadour Garabedian, is eligible. The stone would be free and installation costs are under $100. A very brief biography of Khachadour is available by scrolling down to his name at this web site. His name is listed as Hachadon P. Garabedian (names listed alphabetically by last name) http://hub.dataline.net.au/~tfoen/asians.html

If you would like to know more or are interested in assisting with this endeavor, please contact the student, Paul Sookiasian at Vartan84@aol.com or call 610-399-6873.
